Ghirmay Ghebreslassie had a sensational race and was the first athlete to receive a gold medal at the IAAF World Championship in Beijing (China, Aug. 22 – 30). The 19-year old Eritrean finished first at the marathon in a time of 2:12:47.
For many, Ghebreslassie’s win came as a surprise, as he just debuted in the marathon event. However, the newcomer had already made a name for himself at this year’s Haspa Marathon Hamburg. Back in April he was the runner-up in a great new personal best of 2:07:47.
Now he is celebrating his first international medal! Congratulations from Hamburg!
